I'm not going to cuttag this because hiding it feels like I'm taking care of other people before myself. And that's part of why I don't post, I think, cause I'm doing nothing and feeling shitty and I don't want people to feel obligated to engage with that.

However, TL;DR: SocSec denied disability. Credit card says my check bounced, but went through on second try, $27 please. cobra sez my check last month bounced. finance guy never replied to text about a check from april that the creditor never saw that I want to stop payment. Good: Finance guy called back *at 10 pm*, went over everything I wrote last month. No reason anything should have bounced, I never went low enough in the account day by day to have bounced anything, 2(!) checks were "reversed" by the other side before going through (one was the above credit card), and the cobra check was never presented for payment.

So I've been having this bullshit going on with Social Security and me being declared disabled so I can get some quantity of income since before Otter died. I hadn't bothered to apply before that, because I figured it would just get bounced due to his income being high enough. The social worker assigned to his case since he was cancer and terminal told me that, once it was approved, it would get back-paid to the day I applied, which I hadn't known. So, application. Also, automatic rejection, acquire specialty lawyer, appeal, postponement, postponement, lawyer realizing that Otter died, different application, finally hearing, judge noting that first application superseded by second application, and since second application hadn't yet been evaluated, it hadn't been denied, and he had no standing to rule, good day sir. And 6 months later find out that that had killed *both* applications instead of just the superseded one, re-apply, aggravation talking to people, covid, delay delay delay, more paperwork, delay, until TUesday, when I got a call from lawyer saying it's been denied

Today I call back, having lost 2 days to migraines during business hours, and spend 45 minutes on the phone with the clerk with them filling out the appeals form.

Fortunately, Otter had a Huge Pile of Money in a) a life insurance policy through work, and b) state pensions from when he worked at Rutgers, and a 401k. While it took nearly 6 months to ACCESS THAT FUCKING MONEY, I have 85% of the 401k and about 70% of the pensions socked away into both an IRA for me, and a money market account, which is what I'm paying bills from. So, DESPITE HAVING NO INCOME, I'm not in any danger of being on the street. At the ass end of desperation, I have a 2unit house I could sell. Or, you know, tell the tenants I have to put the rent closer to market rate. (Which I don't do because a) one set of tenants are basically non-biological family, and b) the other set of tenants, their friends, are handicapped. And c) I'm a mensch.)

BUT I'D STILL LIKE TO HAVE SOME FUCKING INCOME CAUSE I'M PARANOID LIKE THAT.

So after talking to the nice law clerk about $SHIT (including all the ways which don't show up in their questionnaires that I am a non-starter as an employee, or even an independent worker with deadlines) I took some time to calm down (listened to the Nice Voice on youtube tell me inconsequential information while I keep my fingers and light levels of attention busy playing solitaire) I was about to open WoW, but decided that yes, it's AUgust 25, I should do the bills so I don't have to call the pay-by-phone system to pay them. Virtuous me!

(Yes, the date on this post, and indeed the date I'm writing it, is August 27.)

It wasn't till I was looking through my calendar to mark down how much money I paid out in doctor copays this month that I realized it was the 27th. Oh yeah, 2 days of migraines.

So after being aggravated at myself for about a half hour, I forced myself to settle down and do the page-markup I do for my bill ledger, to divide the two facing pages into 4 months worth of records. And I kept finding myself with my fists on the table and grinding my teeth. And it's 8:50, and I really should get these bills in the mail TONIGHT to make sure they get there by Sept 1. SO ok. Not gonna do pretty lines on paper, just do the bills and record them later.

So i start opening the bills, in order of a) importance and b) due by date. First up: COBRA. Why do I have 5 letters from them? In order of received: 1)"We received a partial payment for September. Here is the amended payment coupon for the rest of September." 2)"We received a partial payment for August. Here is the amended payment coupon for the rest of August." 3)"Your check #XXX in the amount of (total I pay per month) was declined for insufficient funds. Here is a coupon for August in the full amount you still owe us." 4)"Here is some legal information about when you have to pay your COBRA by, since there's COVID weirdness, and everything's extended and we don't know when it ends." 5)"We still haven't received your payment for August. If we don't have it by LAST DAY OF MONTH your COBRA insurance will be cancelled."

What the everloving actual fuckity fuck fuck fuck.

So I text the guy who oversees my finances, because I don't understand money shit and if I can offshore this I will. This is the guy who's done my inlaws money for decades, so even tho he's a bit smarmy and talks a lot about guns and other shit (which doesn't really bother me, I just wonder if he does that cause he thinks I got along so well with the family cause I was into it like my father in law). He usually at least texts back. I also see that I texted him earlier in the month about a check that (the Specialty Mail Order Pharmacy claims to never have received, that according to the records I could dig up,) was never cashed, and how do I stop it and how much would it cost.

And then my Elder Child comes up with food, and I rant at them for a bit, and realize that a) I'm probably having a panic attack, because b) WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED TO MY MONEY AND I CAN'T PAY BILLS WITHOUT KNOWING THAT. Hopefully *they* have calmed down from the anxiety about WTFMONEYBILLSAAAHHHHH So I realize it's been an hour, and I text FinanceGuy again, apologizing and explaining, and get a text back, "I'll call you as soon as I can login."

And this is where he earns his money. He called me back, at 10:15 at night, and went over every transaction that happened wrt my bills. A) The COBRA check WAS NEVER PRESENTED FOR PAYMENT. B) My check to one of my credit cards was "reversed" (he doesn't know why that happened) and then presented again, and paid. C) my check to the water company was also "reversed", and then presented again and paid. D) At no point in the month did my balance dip low enough for EITHER of them to be declined.

AND when I looked at my current statements from that credit card, and the water company, the credit card is dinging me $27 for having to present it a second time. The water company has no information about that on the statement.

He's going to check with his assistant tomorrow, to see if there was some sort of glitch on their end that might have fucked things up, and get back to me. I'm also going to call COBRA company and a) find out wtf is going on with 'latest day to have money by' and b) WTF DECLINED WHEN NOT EVEN PRESENTED FUCKERS.

But, right now, I'm typing here, and then going to pay WoW. Because I don't have anything to throw that won't break and make me sad, and I don't want to damage the walls cause I don't want to have to deal with them being painted again.

And I'm still wanting to scream.

    Today, I:
  • Called COBRA Management company, to get my account details since I had misplaced the piece of paper I had written them on. I was told that the only record of me in the system was as his dependent, that he is listed as 'terminated' and not 'deceased', and this is incorrect and must be dealt with. I took a case number, and left them to deal.
  • Emailed Otter's HR to tell them of this, and that something is very confused.
  • Was told by R what the details of the account were, and successfully got into the COBRA management company's benefits account to continue to elect COBRA for my health insurance. Only to find that, having listed Spouse&Child as needing insurance, I *must* include the Primary Plan Participant in the insurance, and that doing so has the wrong number of people being insured. Apparently because Otter is NOT listed as deceased, things are SERIOUSLY upgefukt.
  • Called COBRA management company again and confirmed that yes, this is the reason it is all upgefukt, and they need to talk to Otter's employer and get things straightened out, and that it will take 3-5 business days, as it always does. Oh, and that another company will be the COBRA management company on April 2nd. Yes, I know, I called them 2 days ago and they said to complete the coverage with you folks.
  • Screamed for about 2 minutes straight, and then took many deep breaths.
  • Spent time trying to figure out who has our tax info from the cryptic note left by Otter on his computer for me. Even accounting for his atrocious spelling, I can't find anyone with any name anything like the names he wrote down that has ever heard of him, or our 6+ years of unfiled taxes.
  • Spoke with R about the various research projects I'd given her: our food spending is consistent on a monthly basis so we can work on that number as our budget; the post card from our local mazda dealer talking about a recall doesn't have one that is dangerous that we seem to be affected by; the insurance company that was dealing with the tree that came down on our roof had gotten back to her about when the check was cashed, cleared, and other identifying information, and that information was not found in our records.
  • So I Called up his bank and asked if they could find that information for us, to confirm that it was cashed by him. They said yes, but we'd have to come in person to talk about it.
  • Went to Otter's bank (where I now have a couple of accounts) and talked to them, and yes, indeed, that check was deposited into his account. Yay. So much for that 2k.
  • Did some Ingressing while driving around.
  • Went to BJs with R, doing some price comparing and picking up some pens that I love that are really inconsistent as to where I can find them, and these were 10packs of the matching pen and pencils. In addition to the groceries.
  • Had pizza for my 4pm food next to Stop & Shop.
  • Sat in the car while R went into Stop & Shop, because she wasn't going to be long enough for me to get in any cruising for interesting things, and she doesn't like the scent of lilies.
  • Came home and Called the lawyer in Florida who's taking care of my father's sister's estate. Talked to a person this time!!! But not the lawyer. He's out. But now he's it!
  • pored over the TIAACREF pension beneficiary form, and grepped through papers failing to find the information for the new IRA for me.
  • Got called into the kitchen to help R butcher a chicken. (I'd given verbal directions before, but this was eyes on while she wielded the knife.)
  • Found another set of papers with the account number of the new IRA for me, and used that to fill out the TIAACREF paperwork.
  • Called TIAACREF help line to figure out some confusing back-and-forthing in the form to fill out. (Mostly my confusion, less their writing, and making sure I understood that really, I didn't have to write anything on 4 pages of this.) (I wrote "DO NOT NEED" on them just to be clear.)
  • Proudly signed it only to realize that I should not have signed it because it needs a notary and I'm supposed to sign in front of the notary. Fuck.
  • Put it down to deal with tomorrow because I've been up for 19 hours and I'm done.

Not including the other stuff. Done.

The COBRA management company claims that Otter is listed as eligible for COBRA because he was terminated, not deceased. This is causing bloody hell with me trying to elect COBRA.

Furthermore, there will be a new COBRA management company as of next week. I had called them on Monday to ask if it made more sense for me to wait to elect COBRA until they are the company or if I should do it now and the person I spoke to seemed rather flustered and said I should definitely elect it before it got to them and let the system pull things over.

Current COBRA management company has '3-5 business days' for their resolution of issues.

Beginning of boring stuff I did post.

    • Called FinanceGuy and found out:
    • There were, indeed, things I needed to sign inside the envelope I got that I opened, identified was paperwork about the IRA they're setting up, labeled IRA STUFF and put aside for later. Oops.
    • The 401k hasn't shown up yet for them, and in fact is most likely going to show up in my mail as a check made out to the IRA fund. So I should be looking for that Real Soon Now.
    • Astonishingly enough, he agrees with my intention for the money, that I should clear all bills before putting things away. Woot!

He's going to be at my FIL's 90th birthday party this upcoming Saturday. He'll have paperwork for me to sign and I need to be ready to give him a check for however much I'm not using to pay off stuff. This is going to be the *liquid* ish portion of my funds. I've never had this much money before. I don't think my family (parents and up) had equivalent-this much money before.
  • Called Wells Fargo Mortgage: The Deceased Processing Unit (is this anything like food processing?) had to give me to Customer Service (which I had actually dialed originally, and killed it and called the Deceased Processing Unit instead...) and gave me a number that's good till the 30th. And it's $4+ interest for every day past that. This is not a legally binding number; they can mail, fax, or email a number that would be legally binding. No, they cannot guarantee that if I give them my email they won't use it for advertising purposes. So I have to get a certified check, and send it overnight to a really whacky address to get this done.
  • While I was waiting on hold, I emailed Otter's HR person to let them know I'd gotten the life insurance check, and ask she had any idea of when I could expect to get anything from the 401k folks.
  • Called the Credit Union about the home equity loan: They're ok with a personal check. I have the number to be paid off by Friday, and I can walk it in (or spend the money to get it there by Friday).
  • Called the House Insurance to find out how/what to pay/do now that mortgage is being payed off. It's paid through May, renews June 1. I have #OPTIONS about how to pay, and time to think about it. Yay!
  • I sent email to the lovely friends who loaned me money for mortgage, and asked them for their accounting of how much I owe them.
  • I called what will be the new cobra management company (yes, for the insurance I haven't finished filling out the applications for) and found out that they aren't doing any intake, I have to finish the filling out with the current company and let it flow over with the transfer.
  • And I made out a couple of checks for bills while on hold with all of those, and then R and I went out to do EXTREME BANKING!
  • Went to local bank and got a certified check (aka cashier's check, aka treasury check) in the amount of "I don't think I've ever sent this much money before" (plus $10 for the service)
  • Went to local post office and followed the directions of the Lady In Charge to send it overnight. It should be there by noon on the 27th. That will be $24.07, thank you very much.
  • On a roll, we drove over to Busch Campus to pay off the home equity loan we had at the credit union. This took a while, since it was about 2:30-3pm as we went, and school was letting out all over the place.
  • To celebrate the hemorrhage of "I haven't ever spent this much money in one day" we ... spent more money, and had a treat at Thomas Sweet's (excellent store-made ice cream).
  • We discussed dinner on the way home, and decided that sushi was far more interesting than leftovers, and that it was the better part of valor to order in than eat at a restaurant. I had another errand vaguely in mind, but decided to let it slip.
  • Called the oil company to find out why they were trying to charge the oil delivery to our credit card when I had arranged in January that they would no longer do that. Apparently that information never made it into our file, and hopefull will now be in our file.
  • Between getting home and ordering dinner, I wrote out more checks for bills for normal amounts of money, and succumbed to the demands of the cat so lonely because no one ever pets her to be a mattress.
  • After we ordered dinner, I called Otter's insurance company, following up on the call I made on March 5th about getting the claims adjustment check re-issued in my name. Turns out there's a note, saying they called on 3/6 and left a message. Apparently they called the house phone, and I don't know who they left a message with. I found out that I need to send them a copy of the surrogate's affidavit naming me It, and got the address to send it to. Again, this took a while of me being on hold for this to be figured out.
  • Ate delicious sashimi from a new place. I'm not sure it was any less expensive than going to a restaurant would have been. :/
  • Called the insurance company from 5 years ago to talk to them about getting another check reissued (that we'd just found this past weekend, which had been reissued Sept 28, 2017 and was good for 6 months, with no indication of when the original check had been inssued). This took over an hour of talking with someone (who at first couldn't find a record of the check in their system...) and being on hold, and talking to them, and being on hold... and eventually they decided that I could sign a HIPAA release that would give me the right to see his information, and that would give me the right to get the check in my name. (Does anyone else see the circularity of the logic here?) They emailed me the form, I printed it out, filled it out, and in the process found that I needed to give them ... a copy of the death cert and the surrogate's affidavit. *headdesk* Soooo, I included those also.
  • There was something else I did, but I forgot.

all the stuff for the future that's nearly the same in every post )

This week I've been cold, spacy, sleeping, and feeling like I'm braining at 1/4 speed.

R, after trying and failing to get me to deal with the pharmacy to renew my meds, went to do that, with me giving her money from my stash to pay for them. Unfortunately, I need the actual brand name synthroid, which cost, by itself, more money than I gave her. She put the overage onto the debit card for the bank account, and got some more groceries.

I paid the last bill I was waiting for to come in, and gave C a check for one-time dues for some organization he was told would "look good on his resume". $60 was annoying, but small enough in the long run.

After the sticker shock at the pharmacy, R took the Cobra-Management-Company mail that finally showed up and tried to sign me up. Unfortunately, the second page of the form, instead of listing the dependents of the deceased (as the text of the form said it would), only listed Otter's information. She put in an email to their support desk, and got a reply 2 days later saying that they wouldn't talk to her cause of HIPAA. (Which is bullshit, but w'ever.) So she brought up the envelope, gave me the username/password she'd set up, and I dragged my ass to the computer. Only to find that they'd fixed it, and that page now had my and C's name on it. 2 pages later, I came to a screeching halt from the information that it would cost $1500+ for C and I, or 825+ for just me, per month, and would have to be paid up front to date before anything would be covered. Since that's more money than I currently have in the bank, I didn't go any further.

R found for me, on the healthcare.gov website, a link to "people to help you decide what to do". I called the first name on the list (that I got from putting my zip code in) and after playing phone tag for a day or so, talked to him today. It turns out that there is no single place to find out how much meds would cost on medicaid vs private insurance; this kind of comparison (other than "private insurance is always better than medicaid") needs to be done by going from doctor to doctor, pharmacy to pharmacy about drug by drug to compare prices. "I just go to the costco website cause it's useful, and get an idea of the prices from there." After listening to me rant a bit, he also strongly suggested I call the insurance commission and tell them the runaround I've been getting, cause apparently it *is* as fucked up as it sounds, and he's sure they would love to hear about it.

Today, I didn't take a call that turned out to be the Cobra Management Company calling to talk to me. No information as to why on the message they left. I didn't take a call that turned out to be the life insurance place, which tells me that they're FINALLY through doing their determination, and that the check will be sent out Monday, second day air, and if I have any questions to call. So I called, to find out *which* second day air thing, and did we have to be home for it, and got the 'i'm not in my office right now' message. So I called the generic customer service, and they said second day air is UPS, and they don't send it requiring a signature. They also said that I can call Monday afternoon and get a tracking number.

So I think I'm going to leave all this bullshit alone till Wednesday, when I will theoretically have a check in hand and be able to have a clue if I can afford ANYTHING AT ALL.

fmh.
khatru: KItty goes yay (Default)
I've been up and down out of bed since my last post, but only for a few hours at a time. Today, my head is still just as stuffed up and drippy, but for the first time in a week I don't feel completely miserable and bogged down with it.

Among hte mail I got last month that I don't recall if I mentioned here was one from what's claiming to be an attorney for my (deceased) father's youngest sister. It says she deceased in August, and there's some property she held title to with my grandmother. They'd like to sell it, but they need permission from everyone who might have interest. I would inherit 1/10th of the value of the piece of property. (1/2 was my grandmother, who had 5 children; as the only inheritor of one of her children, I would get the 1/5 that was my dad's part, which is 1/10 of the whole). No clue who my aunt's primary beneficiary is. Lucky them. I had called and given them my phone number and email; they called once and left a message, and back and left one. Today, they called and when I picked up I couldn't hear anyone. So I said that, and hung up.

I came downstairs and stared at the pile of stuff in front of my seat. Some mail (one bill), mostly bullshit. One letter from the old health insurance company, saying that there's Yet Another Check that didn't get cashed. So I called the Dead Aunt's Lawyers and left another message, and then called the health insurance. Now, the last check I recieved was made out to Otter, and the bank cashed it for me into the Estate account with the comment that they REALLY want any more checks made out to me somehow.

So when I got someone on the phone (after a surprisingly short wait), I said that. And the person put me on hold while they went and checked with their manager. And came back eventually, and said they were sorry, manager was trying to find out how to do this, and I said ok, put me on hold again.

This went on, checking on me, asking a question, putting me on hold, for 52 minutes before they decided they couldn't deal with it now, could they please have a callback number. Just... shaking my head. I *can't* be the only person that's ever had this problem. It's really that difficult? Ask me for paperwork, or make it out to the estate of. That's what that account is for.

So now I'm back to trying to figure out what days to do the work of paying bills, given when they come in and when they're due, and filling out the forms for the TIAA-CREF pension plan.

Still no sign of life insurance money. R sold some old pokemon cards, got a shitload of money, which helped the bank account. Otherwise nothing. I have her on the task of trying to sell my old magic cards, but that's relatively low priority.

wheee.

    So far today:
  • Called life insurance person direct, left message with my name, Otter's name, claim number, my cellphone number, and the fact that I called a couple of weeks ago and haven't ever heard back.
  • Called Abby and made arrangements about the chocolate party
  • Called Specialty Pharmacy, returning their fucking annoying automated call. And, just like on the 9th (which they have records of me calling), I *again* had to give them permission to send the med, and apparently the $60 copay is *every month* until max out of pocket. Which I don't recall it being, but Otter handled it cause it was his insurance etc, and I just don't know for sure.
  • Called PSEG wrt lack of return envelope. Customer Service Rep has no clue why there was no envelope, as far as they know there's no program about asking to not get envelopes, and they made a note to make sure for my bill to have envelopes again. Would that everything were this easy.
  • Called Oil Company - overage mentioned on receipt received 20180119 is actually all paid up.
  • Called Verizon and fought my way through the voice menu to a person, where I talked about how the person who moved the account over from my deceased husband's name had said that I should call and ask to be put back on the 2 year plan to get the lower rates. I was told, this time, that my *discounts* were locked in till 2020, but that I would still be subject to any basic rate increases. They also said that, should that happen, I should call again to find out if I had the lowest prices available, which apparently I currently have.
  • I had also tried to create a myverizon account, first, to see if I could do it myself without poking the phone monster. It got all the way through the setup process till I got to the 'create account' button, and then failed to react at all. No spinny things, no visible aspect on the browser frame to indicate any sort of processing or transaction. It was like I wasn't clicking the button at all. I turned off my adblockers, and tried again, same effect. So that's when I called the phone menu system to beat it into submission. I mentioned this to the person I got on the line, and they connected me to what I think was called the 'e-troubleshooter'. Who walked me through it twice more, including clearing cache and cookies, to the same result. I actually have a trouble ticket in to the 'devs' to figure it out. I'm betting some combo of linux and firefox and blockers, but we'll see.
  • Called Water Company to ask about the charges that weren't on the previous bill. I'm wrong, it was on the older bill. Also, account wasn't name-changed, it was complete new account. Person on phone looked at Otter's bill history, and said that most often it was about $55 or less. So whee, I guess I budget 60 for months we go over.
  • Called life insurance basic help line. Oh, this was special. First, my Claims Consultant is not the person listed on the letter, it's someone else. I now have their first name and their extension. Second, they don't know how much the insurance is for. Apparently it depends on Otter's earnings, and his cause of death. Sometimes that REDUCES IT. FMH. Third, of COURSE they don't put the interest information on the brochure about the "security account" that I can put that money into, cause obviously it's going to change on a fucking whim. Now I'm *really* pissed off.
  • Sent email to Otter's HR person detailing the info in the phone call, and asking them to please clear up whatever issue they are having. Stupid fucking shit.
  • tbd

Actually did something.

The last few days I've been .... Ok, more like the last week, I've been doing nothing. My sleep cycle has cycled around to me being awake from anywhere from 6-10pm, to 6-8am. C has been poking me both at 11:30 am ish and at 1:30 pm -ish, and even when I sit up and try to get up, I'm falling back asleep. Last night I didn't wake up at all till about 10:30 pm. Tonight I managed to get up around 6pm, and come downstairs cause bills, goddammit. I had asked C to tell me what bills there were, and he did. Yay. There were also some letters from Social Security back on the 25th (yay for inculcating "write teh date received on the envelope, dammit"), one of which was acknowledgement that I was getting the widow's benefit of $255 (which hit my bank account on the 19th, iirc, after the meeting on the 16th), and the other acknowledging upcoming hearing (tho no date set yet.) That was cc'ed to lawyer, too. So yay.

I *have* been getting online and doing wow things overnight, tho, which at least forwards my nominal mindless pleasure.

    So, things I did today:
  • Realized my checkbook and the bank readout were hundreds of dollars off, and so did the arithmetic to resolve my checkbook, finding an egregious error that should never have happened at all. So yeah, $200 off where my checkbook says low, ok. where my checkbook says high, bad.
  • Looked on the life insurance letter for the general customer service number.
  • Paid bills. Still working on tracking what's needed, so can't tell what budget should be yet.
  • Organized what should be done next.

Now, to play wow.

grumble

Jan. 23rd, 2018 01:17 pm
khatru: KItty goes yay (Default)
Today started with me needing to take a migraine pill when my alarm for my 8am pills went off. At some point later, C came up to see if I needed to be awake, at which point I asked for food, please, so I could take the rest of my meds. I came up for air from the migraine around noon, with no food. I managed to get talking enough to ask for eggs, and came downstairs so I was functional for the 1pm call to cancel the trash pickup account.

Which went much easier, once they could get me on the line with someone. Whee.

Now I have to figure out what I can do with this migraine lurking.

  • Received phone call and, finally, cancelled the trash pickup company I don't like.
  • Had R create a receptacle for incoming income tax prep items.
  • Resolved checkbook and bank (using online statement, go me) As I found back in the day, having spending money and bills come from the same account is dangerous.
  • Called R down to use the debit card to pay off student loan. Aiieeeeee
  • Failed, due to the debit card not having enough daily transfer to do so, and my having somehow not gotten the account number when I opened the account. wtf?
  • Created a box for bills paid to date out of the shipping box for the leather checkbook cover and handbag that I ordered from Oberon Designs. Pretty, but could be better. And yes, expensive, but pretty. C did most of the work.
  • Created a "done pile" container from a metal mesh phone stand I got from Staples years ago that we found in a pile still in the plastic wrap. (No, I don't know why I bought it, it was circa 2006).
  • Figured out where to put them where they are both within reach and out of the general way.
  • Opened recent mail, marked up notations on envelopes, sorted into inbox/record keeping.
  • Found bank statement from account that student loan money was in, confirmed account number, to be paid. (aaiie, 9500, so much for having some unexpected money.)
  • R cooked one of the keto recipes I found on the web. As is common so far, I like it, she doesn't. *sigh*

OH, and...

    On Jan 19, I:
  • Went to credit union and brought the home equity loan up to date, and then put enough money in the formerly joint account to pay the HEL monthly for 10 months, and set that up to happen automatically.
  • Did some Ingress things while on RU campus
  • Went to the optician and picked up my glasses. Which are driving me crazy, but I'm giving them a week.

I don't recall doing anything yesterday. I came downstairs cause I didn't want to sit alone in my room, but that's it.

    Today, I
  • Had brunch at Panera with C, who was my driver today.
  • Went to SocSec office and talked to someone, giving them information to fill in a form. I will be getting $255 lump sum payout as immediate death benefit, in a couple of weeks, direct deposit. He also filled out a form to go with the disability hearing that is pending, to hurry it up and to have everything decided at once; if I am declared disabled, I get socsec payments immediately. Otherwise, I have to wait 4 years.
  • Stopped by the Paindoc building and had C go up to the office and pick up the forms for handicapped parking placards.
  • Went to DMV with two titles in hand, and the form to fill out for the missing title we've given up on finding. Got distressed and flummoxed by the forms, looking for information I didn't have and didn't realize I needed. Gave up and went home.
  • Got C and R to get me the odometer readings adn VINs and such, which involved jump-starting one car that had run out its battery somehow. (Because with new cars, there is no dial, you have to have the car on to see the odometer. *headdesk*. Filled out ALL THE FORMS.
  • During this, had a small snack, cause it was pill time.
  • Went BACK to DMV and waited on line for a bit; someone came through checking forms and said I was ok, and that it was ok to sit on this chair near the front and leave C on line for me. Ended up having to go through the line twice: the first two titles were put into my name, and the new duplicate title was done, and the handicapped parking placards, for $189. And then I had to fill out the new title to put it into my name, for another $64.50. (4.50 to move the registrations along with them, on each car.)

I believe it was about an hour or so total, it just felt like forever. I'm fried, aching, and going to bed soon.

To Do soon (so that the checks mailed earlier this week have a chance to reach them):
  • Find notes re: calling credit union branch manager directly about making an appointment to close/change accounts
  • Call Credit Union, make appointment for showing them stuff. FIND L8 FORM!!!!! fuck. (note: Can be downloaded from http://www.sussex.nj.us/documents/surrogate/itl8.pdf )
  • Find notes re: talking to various companies/entities about adjusting late fees etc wrt extensions.
  • Call PSEG, ask for late fee to be removed? Check what needs to happen to be considered up to date?
  • dammit, there was something else and it just fled my mind. Had to do with other things on those notes.

    To Do SOON!
  • Cannot do until make payment! Waiting on Life Insurance. Call Mortgage, ask for late fee to be removed.
  • Fill out forms for 401k

I did nothing Saturday; woke up late, headache-adjacent. Had C put bengay on the aching parts, and a hotsock. (Similar to http://bedbuddy.net/ but not that brand.) After a few hours (after the bengay was soaked in and not a problem for adhesive) I had him put on a lidocaine patch. Neither of those helped significantly, but it's possible they kept it from being worse.

Woke up earlyish on Sunday, but instead of trying transdermal effects, took one of my hoarded Good Pain Meds. Got to the computer after a bit, poked around on WoW most of the day; ended up falling asleep ZONK in my chair at 6:45, while waiting for the folks who I play with to appear online at 7pm. *sigh* R woke me up for dinner at 7:40, I got on WoW, we played till 10:30 or so. Maybe later. I did wow things for a few hours more, and suddenly woke up, in my chair, covered iwth random pieces of clothing (apparently I was cold, but never woke up) at 7:45 am. Took meds, crawled into bed.

Woke up at 11:30 ish by C, checking if I wanted/needed anything. Asked for food, ate it, eventually decided that I didn't really want to do anything but I also didn't want to sit in my room alone. (which is what I did yesterday, never getting checked on till 4pm or so) Am downstairs.

Received email from life insurance! yay! No information on how much the payout is. An offer of having the money in an interest bearing account wiht the insurance company. No information on how much the interest is. I called the number for my consultant at 2pm, left a message. No response. The packet included a pamphlet about What Beneficiaries Need To Do After The Death Of A Loved One. The first chapter is "in the first two weeks". The second chapter is "weeks 3 and 4". the third chapter is "In hte next month." I'll note that Otter died on Dec 8, and the postmark on the envelope is January 10th. Fuck them.

Having agitated AGAIN for the kids to PLEASE look for the title of the car that was gotten in late November, more likely early December and thus on the day before Otter went into the hospital, I finally got some motion out of them. They found the envelope from the bank that held the car loan, with the old title (with the lien holder on it) and the various papers from the visit to DMV that acquired the new title and the handicapped placards for Otter. Unfortunately, the new title wasn't in it. Also, none of the receipts listed the date of the transaction. (wtf dmv?) So we STILL don't know, for sure, when it was done. *argh*

Aggravation, annoyance, and a chilly house. Wheee.

Yesterday, I

  1. Ended up... at this point I can't recall if I was awake all night, or just woke up hella early. I think the former, because I was up and in WoW when C came up to make sure I was up.
  2. Discussed with C the thought of leaving about an hour early for my doctorville visits and going to the bank Otter had accounts in to close them out, that's also the bank that has our mortgage.
  3. Also took my morning pills despite not having food.
  4. Went to the bank and was seen relatively immediately. However, it took on the order of 45 minutes for the Customer Service banker to research what needed to be done to a) turn a joint account into a solo account, and b) turn a solo account into an estate account. This involved filling out 2 L8 forms, one for each account. (Then why is there room for more things in the space to list items? o.O) We left with the first done, and the second waiting for me to get the estate tax number, leaving only 15 minutes to get to doctorville (which takes about 20).
  5. Got to Doctorville not that late, which also didn't matter much as the first visit was to give blood to be analyzed for my endocrinologist visit on the 22nd, and wasn't time critical. The intake person was sympathetic to my dubious insurance status, and offered to simply bill it as if I was still under the same insurance..
  6. (Right now, I realize that I *was* up all night, because I had been required to fast for the blood work, and so wanted to be awake to make sure I had food right up until I couldn't, so I wouldn't be cranky/whiny at the point where I was needing food.)
  7. Was poked for blood which only hurt a little bit, and only needed one poke. yay! C had, indeed, recalled to have food available, and I got down the elevator to the next floor before I was overcome with FOOD NOW and sat in the hallway to wolf down the cheese and crackers.
  8. Went to allergy office and registered there, completely surprised by them not asking for insurance info (which is usually asked for at every intake) or copay.
  9. Talked to office assistant and accepted condolences; doctor, who gave the shot, and assured me that, while Doctorville did not take *new* patients with medicaid, they did accept it as 'changed circumstance' for established patients, and that he personally would be happy to see me to administer the shots without charge, as long as the shots were paid for by medicaid, which he expected would be.
  10. Talked to office staff to make next appointment, where I was told they already had the next shot in hand, and would be happy to get "samples" from the company to use on me until insurance was settled.
  11. Had lunch at the Doctorville Cafeteria while I waited the requisite time to ensure I wasn't having a negative reaction to the shot. (Yes, every time. It's weird that way.)
  12. Acquired the estate tax number while at lunch, taking advantage of Doctorville's wifi and having the internet in my pocket.
  13. Texted with R while at lunch regarding the fact that we'd run out of oil, again, what the oil company said about when they could get to us, and what we could do in the meantime.
  14. Hit Doctorville's art for Ingress making it the appropriate color again. By this time, I was starting to feel achy, my tummy being more and more gassy, and generally unhappy.
  15. Went back to bank to set up estate account. The person I'd worked with before was busy with a long task, so I was seen to by someone else, who had to research how to do what I was asking to be done, because apparently the change to the joint account wasn't being reflected in the system yet, she didn't realize my name was not the same as my husband's, she couldn't figure out how to convert the solo checking account to an estate account, and took a while to decided it would just be closed and an estate account opened, and then had problems doing that because, as I overheard her on the phone to her guide, the correct buttons weren't showing up when she was trying to create an account. This took over an hour, all told.
  16. Decided not to go to the optician to get the one pair of glasses that have come in, despite the fact that it's the pair where they put the old lenses into a plastic frame to hold me over, and they've been making me crazy, and instead
  17. Came home and went directly to bed, taking one of my higher end pain killers instead of my usual one, it now being pill time, and generally being in large amounts of pain and aggravation. Yes, the shots often make me feel out of sorts, and eventually (like, hours later) uncopeful, but I don't recall deep ache over most of my right side being a symptom before. Also, tummy was massively more unhappy, and I don't think I ate anything.

I ate a little bit of dinner when it happened (chinese delivery, roast pork w/snow peas, carrots, and ?bok choy? without any gravy) and went back to bed. Around midnight I had some toast to take my pills with, and a little later a microwaved potato with a pile of shred cheese, and then went to bed again. I woke up around 8am, to the alarm I've finally programmed on my phone, feeling still a little achy but much improved. I ate some food, had my pills, read a little bit of the latest(?) Liaden book, and am now downstairs as of around 11am to deal with the day.

Also, on the 10th, I called up att customer service and did a one-time payment by phone to make sure it was paid before the due date of the 11th for service cutoff. Interestingly enough, the letter I was sent said "pay by the 11th" and the phone service said "pay by the 10th".

So far today, I

  • Cleaned out the main teapot, and made tea
  • Opened all of the mail from the past two days, sorting into trash, shred, records, and bills.
  • Ignored a phone call, and then listened to the message, it being the paindoc's office saying the forms for DMV about the handicapped parking placards were ready to be picked up.
  • Ate the lovely lunch that R made for me.
  • Called the old trash company, and was put on hold.
  • While on hold, Addressed envelopes to send out the L8 forms from the bank yesterday, stuffed them, sealed and stamped, now waiting for being mailed.
  • While on hold, Sent email to Otter's company's HR person, regarding absence of communication from life insurance company or COBRA management company, asking if she can find out if they've sent me anything, or give me a contact more direct than hitting up the web.
  • After 35 minutes on hold, Talked to Adrian who gave me the final payment number, and told me that since there is a suspension of service due to being unable to pay, he could not actually cancel my account, and I will have to call back AGAIN to cancel the account after the payment is received and posted. *headdesk*
  • Called up oil company to see what arrangements could be made about paying other than having it automagically put on the credit card (which explains a lot about why the credit card is so loaded). Talked to Ruby, the credit manager. Put a reminder on my calendar to call in May about getting on the monthly budget plan, and to talk about getting on the price lock plan.
  • Sent email again to Otter's HR person: We had wanted to find out when we had maxed out our out-of-pocket expenses, and had needlessly continued paying copays, so that we could go have an argument with our healthcare providers regarding that money, and hopefully get it repurposed to cover any uncovered costs. Otter seemed to think he had to go through HR, and I asked if that was true, or if I got to wade through United Healthcare's phone tree to find the info.
  • Tried to look up on the web if the ingredients of Macuhealth interfered with Synthroid. Was only able to find those ingredients in combination with multivitamins, which is usually in combination with minerals, which do interfere with Synthroid, so was unable to conclude anything useful. Meh. (trying to figure out how to apportion out pills across the timeslots.)

Short day, but I'm done, as I'm dozing off again. Wheee. Stupid sleep cycles. I wanted to do stuff this evening.

Jan 8 didn't happen. Every time I thought I was awake, I fell back asleep.

It's noon ish now. I've been awake since aout 5am, but I'm only now getting to the point of doing things.

Bleah.

    Today, I
  • Called paindoc and talked to some staff member, who said of course he'd be willing to fill out the dmv handicapped parking form. I didn't ask if she was sure, I hadn't even given my name, but I'm not going to argue.
  • Called Doctorville about getting anti-hive shot, appointment for Jan 11
  • Called Doctorville about lack of synthroid. Made appointment for bloodwork, and followup exam.
  • Realized that I was flailing, decided I was hungry, C offered to make me food. Ate it.
  • Printed out handicapped parking application (had R set up the printer, realized that attaching it to the dining room desktop involved crawling under the table, swapped to my laptop and printed it from there)
  • Filled it out which involved realizing that it wants the signature of the registered vehicles' owner, and determining that by the time I hand them that piece of paper, I will be the registered vehicles' owner....
  • Sent R off to drop it off at the doctor's office, which is what the staff person on the phone said to do.
  • Processed all currently unopened mail - some with intake undated, some from 12/23. Sorted into bills to pay, things to process wrt death, things to look at soon, things to laugh at, trash, shred.
  • Pulled out my ledgers from when I was paying bills regularly, created new pages and filled in current data.
  • Wrote out checks and put in envelopes for everything but the mortgage (last day the 15th), the Home Equity Loan (I have weird mail that I need to talk to them about) and the cellphone bill, which they sent me mail that I got today saying they'll shut it off if not paid by the 11th, so I need to talk to them tomorrow about paying that in person somewhere.

Frustration

Jan. 5th, 2018 04:41 pm
khatru: KItty goes yay (Default)
    Today, I:
  • Laid in bed for 5 hours, during which I did not sleep overnight. I expect this is due to having woken up around 8pm yesterday after taking migraine meds and letting my body be unhappy.
  • Received a phone call from the doctor's office where I had a 10:30 am appointment to get my anti-hive shot. Apparently, they had not received the medication from the specialty pharmacy, and thus we need to reschedule. They gave me the number of the specialty pharmacy so I could kick them
  • Got dressed and got downstairs about the time I would have if we were going out to the doctor.
  • Called the Surrogate's office for the county Otter died in (which more than one person had said was where I needed to go), to find out where it was, and also to ask about the fact that the DMV website said that, to transfer the title, it needed stuff from the county he lived in. Turns out 'county he lived in' was correct. They gave me the number to call them.
  • Called the Surrogate's Office for the county we live in, got directions, and was told I didn't need to bring any proof of what he had, or any papers like that, they'd figure out everything there.
  • Went out with C to have breakfast at the diner, as it was on the way to the county admin building.
  • Stopped at the eyeglass place for C's glasses, as it was also on the way. His were ready, mine were not. (unsurprising, both.)
  • Got to the County Admin Building and walked from where the car was parked through the long hallway and into the Surrogate's Office section in mostly one fell swoop. A slow swoop, but a swoop nonetheless.
  • Waited for a while, and then talked to the assistant surrogate or something the like, and found that while they were not going to question me about the value of anything, they really did want the checking account numbers and the VIN of the cars. She was willing to type it all up and leave 'currently unfindable' in place of the info we didn't have. I poked my phone onto Kelly Blue Book website to get the values of the cars, which she persistently lowballed. I received "Affidavits of Surviving Spouse", which apparently stands in for Surrogate's Certificates when the estate is worth less than $50,000. Yay, we're poor?
  • Got directions, and went to DMV to retitle the cars, it being almost 30 days since Otter died, and that's what the DMV website tells me is the grace period for this. As it turns out, if I don't produce the titles, I can't just create titles in my own name with their database info and the relevant paperwork. I must *first* ask for copies of the titles as they currently exist, at the cost of $60 per title, and THEN I can ask for the titles to be changed over to my name, at the cost of $60 per title, with the registration carrying over for $4.50. We have three cars.
  • Noped the fuck right out of that and came home.

Partly due to pain, partly due to 'i am not paying nearly 400 dollars to do this', and with the gentle words from the nice police officer who had drawn duty that day in Somerville's DMV office, who told me that as long as I don't do Bad Things (tm) (like commit crimes, or do things that might cause people to try to find the owner, or try to register the cars again in the decedent's name) that I won't be hassled over it.

Oh, and I also called the pharmacy to find out why I hadn't gotten my synthroid refilled along with everything else. Apparently I'm out of refills.

    Ok, back to work
  • Opened today's mail which was a bank statement (Yay, info for an account I didn't have info for! Money exists!) and an invoice for the furnace service last monday (nothing owed, yay) and found a few more sympathy cards (thankyou)
  • Called Lawyer again about what to do for next steps. Left message. Sent email.
  • Called paindoc re whether he'd be willing to sign off on handicapped parking forms. (Then DL from DMV and get him to fill out, if he's ok with it.)
  • Called town hall Of COURSE sewer is late. $155.32 to bring it current. Can pay next week. Also, bring death cert, talk to Tax Assessor's office, get stuff in my name. (maybe wait till after mortgage killed off?)
  • Talked to kids about getting a tree, and other shopping things via the BJs coupon book that arrived ?yesterday?
  • Called Mortgage. Set into motion getting my name on their paperwork (i wasn't listed on the loan cause last time we refi'ed I wasn't working), set into motion info about death, got info on where to send things ("ATTN: Deceased Processing Team" -- sounds like they do post mortems :D ), penalties will be waived when they happen, and I should ask for payout amount when I'm actually going to do it.
  • Looked up what is needed to declare someone dead to Social Security. Can't do it online, has to be in person or on phone.
  • Called up Social Security and got put on the line for holding: 1 hour, 30 minute wait, as of 3:40 pm. I didn't believe they would call back, and I had no more calls I could do today, so I put my phone on an external battery and waited.
  • Filled out 529 form while waiting on hold.
  • Read instructions about filling out 401k beneficiary payout form.
  • Sent email to cpa re taking some cash when I rollover Otter's 401k acct
  • Sent email to HR person asking if Otter owned any stocks (I know he had some in previous incarnations of the company, just don't know about current.)
  • Opened other old mail, finding direct deposit pay stubs and a couple of old bills
  • Took delivery of paid-for meds from drugstore.
  • Added needed meds to pill pod, got C to put the rest away
  • Pulled out eye supplements from my bag and added t hem to today's pill pod, had C put the rest away.
  • Call picked up finally at 5:15 pm. I didn't get the guys' name, unfortunately, I was so astonished at not being dropped. I gave him all the info he asked for, and the death had not been reported yet, so he put all the info in and set me up with an appointment to present all the various forms in person on January 16 (boo, so far ahead) in nearby Union. Maybe this won't suck too much.
  • Called the cpap machine place at 5:30 pm, only to get the emergency-after-hours. Since it isn't an emergency, used the contact form on their website to ask what to do with the cpap stuff.
  • called friend who offered to visit next week to help do re what she would do, left message
  • Called oil company, they're closed too. Giving up on phone calls till Tuesday.

putting it here means I can access it anywhere. I used todo this back on lj.

    Calls I made
  • Called vision place and made appointments (Thu 1:15) for C and I, for eye exams and glasses as needed.
  • Called donation place to ask about death certificate again. Got answering service, left message.
  • Called trash services. (Republic Services) We received a letter dated Dec 8th that our services were suspended for over-60-day-due bill. Person I talked to claimed not to be able to turn them back on due to computer system refusing it due to over-60-days. At least it's cold out.
  • Called Plymouth Rock insurance re home/car insurance policies. They were happy to take his name off the policies and put mine on just on my say so over the phone. This seems wrong to me, but I'm not arguing.
  • Barbara At Plymouth Rock said that I should see if there was life insurance, because that was a thing they did when it was all Prudential. She gave me the number for PruLife, and connected me to a person. Unfortunately, the life insurance policy they have on file lapsed many years ago. *sigh*
  • Called TIAA-CREF. Received direct phone number for beneficialry svcs: 888-380-6428. (8am-7pm EST M-F) Rcvd PIN to put on subject line of any email. Death Cert needs Cause Of Death filled out. Can scan/email/fax Death Cert, DOES NOT NEED RAISED SEAL. (yay!) Needs Surrogate Cert (or whatever), same as DC, DOES NOT NEED RAISED SEAL. Regardless of delay in receiving DC, should get info by snail mail around Jan 10. (note to self: make note of the pin somewhere else.)
  • Called PNC Investors to find out why we got mail from them for a 529 acct that doesn't match the known Franklin Templeton account number. Reason: They're weird, it's actually the same account. *facepalm*
  • Cathy, the PNC person connected me to Franklin Templeton person, who guided me through their website to find the form to print out to change the information.

    Things still to do:
  • Find the original forms re donation that I faxed, and mail them out. (or did I do that? I think I did that... shit.)
  • Call water company about grace period
  • call pseg about grace period
  • call town, make sure sewer is up to date (every 6 months)
